Quality Of Life

Greenville is a quiet, well-established community where living is a pleasure. Our size is large enough to promote a strong business climate, yet small enough that neighbor still knows neighbor.

Ask residents what they like best about living in Greenville and most will respond with "quality of life." Our community is considered an ideal place to raise a family... recreation opportunities are abundant, health care is affordable, our public and parochial schools are superior, and our crime rate is low.

Recreation
Whether it be at the beautiful City Park, the YMCA, or at one of the area's public or private golf courses, Greenville offers recreational activities appealing to all interests. Young and old alike gather at the City Park to spend hours enjoying its well-tended areas of picnic grounds, playgrounds, soccer fields, tennis and shuffleboard courts, swimming pools, fishing ponds, and basketball courts. The City Park has been the home of world, state, and local horseshoe tournaments. For the nature enthusiast, the area boasts a Nature Center located at the Shawnee Prairie Reserve.

Shopping and Dining
Be it a gift for that certain someone, an outfit for a special occasion, or just the weekly groceries, Greenville has it. With 83 of its buildings listed on the National Register of Historical Places, Downtown Greenville is a wonderful home to many retail and specialty shops as well as several dining establishments. Other shopping opportunities in the city include strip malls made up of national chains and local stores. Greenville also offers a wide variety of restaurants located throughout the community.

Culture
Though Greenville is not the next up and coming Broadway, it takes pride in providing quality arts and culture for the community. The breathtaking Henry St. Claire Memorial Hall is the location for theatrical and musical performances presented by The Darke County Civic Theater and other local and professional groups brought in by The Darke County Center for the Arts. Also located at the Henry St. Claire Memorial Hall is the Anna Bier Gallery which holds professional visual art shows and events. Another art collection in Greenville is the Robert Shiffler Art Gallery which has gained national recognition for its modern art and sculpture. During the summer months the City Park is filled with music and entertainment by The Greenville Community Concert Band which performs in the band shell, an outdoor concert hall. Greenville is also home to the Greenville Public Library and the Garst Museum, which has numerous local and regional treasures. In addition, local groups and organizations sponsor a wide variety of events all through the year.

Community Festivals
Community festivals are a well celebrated tradition in Greenville. Annual festivals attracting regional attention include the Great Darke County Fair, referred to as the largest county fair in Ohio, and the Annie Oakley Festival, celebrating the county's most famous native. In 1999, Greenville received first place out of 130,000 entries in Mickey's Hometown Parade Contest. This entitled the town to a July parade featuring Mickey Mouse and all of his friends. The 45,000 to 50,000 people attending the parade enjoyed a once in a life time event.

Health Care

A recent study conducted by the Miami Valley Health Improvement Council showed that when compared to the region's eight other general hospitals, Greenville's Wayne Hospital ranked as the most economical provider of primary care services. The study showed that health care costs could play an important factor in site selection for businesses looking to locate in the region. Greenville's economical, high-quality, health care is a definite advantage.

Housing
Housing from modest to elegant is available in Greenville at prices not often found in larger cities. Greenville's historic residential architecture is exceptional. Styles range from Victorian brick and frame Italianate to twentieth century Craftsman. Set on tree-lined streets, these beautiful homes could scarcely be duplicated today. For those preferring new construction, newer residential developments exist throughout the City, offering quality and affordable homes.
